Early life

Fergus Flanagan began his journey into magic with a simple coin vanish that captivated his interest from an early age. With the rise of David Blaine and The Masked Magician, his passion for magic grew. He was soon hustling friends and family with magic tricks. A pivotal moment came when he landed his first corporate gig at The Epsom Derby, marking the beginning of his professional career in magic alongside his commitment to education.

While pursuing his studies in sociology at The University of Nottingham, Fergus continued to hone his magic skills, performing at various campus events and private functions. In a twist of fate during his final year, he auditioned for a children’s show on BBC called “Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic!”. Just two weeks after graduating, Fergus found himself filming for the show, which became a major success, catapulting him into the spotlight as a regular personality on the children’s channel.

Public Stage Magic Shows

In 2019, Fergus Flanagan brought his stage show “When I Grow Up, I Want To Be A Magician” to London theaters, a deeply personal production blending magic with themes of mental health. Contrasting with his usual performances, this show posed a significant challenge, delving into the complexities of being a magician. Despite this, it enjoyed a successful sell-out run in London, leading to its selection by Underbelly for the 2020 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Notably, Derren Brown praised the show as “wonderful”. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show regrettably never made it to Edinburgh.

Beyond his public performances, Fergus is frequently booked for stage shows as a corporate magician. He has adapted his show to suit various venues and settings, consistently earning outstanding reviews (click here to read some!). Combined with his charismatic presence, Fergus delivers a captivating blend of magic and mindreading that promises to astonish and enchant audiences.

Television

Since leaving university in 2011, Fergus Flanagan has maintained a presence as a television magician, appearing intermittently over the past decade. In 2023, he collaborated with the BBC for “The Magic Of The Six Nations” during the opening weekend of The Six Nations rugby, reaching an audience of over 9 million people. The bespoke magic he showcased became a highlight of the campaign.

His television career began with Objective Productions, where he starred in the BAFTA-winning show “Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic!”. Over the course of three series, totaling 39 episodes, Fergus gained popularity among young viewers. His stint on CBBC also included presenting roles on iconic shows like Blue Peter, as well as appearances on programs such as Sam and Mark’s Big Friday Wind Up, Match Of The Day Kickabout, and Jedward’s Big Adventure.

His visibility on CBBC opened doors to other opportunities in television. He made notable appearances on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, reaching an audience of 4 million viewers, and featured on BBC’s A Question Of Sport, as well as Sky One’s Gamechangers. Additionally, Fergus has contributed as a “talking head” on BBC News, BBC Radio, and Channel 5.

Magic on Zoom

In March 2020, Fergus Flanagan redirected his focus to becoming a virtual magician, also known as a Zoom magician. Initially uncertain about the feasibility of virtual magic, he swiftly established himself as one of the leading performers globally in this emerging field. By 2020, he was conducting an astonishing 25 shows per week. His schedule often spanned across different time zones, starting his day with shows in Sydney and ending it with performances in New York.

In December 2020 alone, Fergus successfully delivered 81 virtual events over a span of three weeks, entertaining clients including Coca-Cola, Disney, and Amazon. Little did he anticipate that 2021 would continue to heavily rely on virtual performances.

His successful transition to virtual magic garnered significant media attention, with coverage by BBC, The Guardian, and Red Bull, highlighting his adaptation and success in this new realm of entertainment.

In 2022, Fergus Flanagan experienced his busiest year yet, managing a packed schedule of both in-person and virtual events. Alongside his performances, he launched the Magic Masterclass app, designed for aspiring magicians eager to learn the intricacies of the trade. Additionally, Fergus co-founded TalkMagic in 2022, a company that offers interactive workshops focusing on creativity, storytelling, and mental health.
