What is Street Magic?

“What is street magic” is a question I am asked reguarly. Having recently taken to the streets of London to film a new showreel (coming soon), a blog about what street magic is, and why I love it, felt relevant (to the 2 of you reading this…).

Firstly, I think it’s important to define…what is street magic? It is a form of close-up magic that is performed in public spaces, such as the streets, or any other open areas accessible to the public. This differs from stage magic, which is performed on a formal stage with a seated audience. Street magic is more intimate and interactive, often involving only a small group or even a single individual at a time. It is free to take part in – although many performers also make a living from this way of performing (by asking for donations).

What tricks do street magicians do?

Much like close-up magic that you might see at a corporate event, street magicians typically perform their tricks and illusions using everyday objects. Eg: cards, coins, rubber bands, rings, and other items that are readily available. They may also incorporate elements of mentalism, mind reading, and sleight-of-hand techniques.

The unique charm of street magic lies in its spontaneity and the close proximity of the audience to the magician. There are no fancy props or elaborate sets. This makes it an accessible and engaging form of entertainment that captivates spectators of all ages. It’s why it has been a feature of magic for hundreds of years and a particularly popular form of entertainment in recent history.

Why is street magic popular?

Street magic gained significant popularity in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, thanks to television shows and specials featuring renowned street magicians David Blaine, as well as Criss Angel. These magicians brought the art form to a wider audience. Arguably, David Blaine is the reason I ended up pursuing magic so obsessively. I can’t think of a better television show than David Blaine’s first television street special – it truly took the world by storm.

Why does street magic work?

Street magic benefits from the element of surprise. Passersby are not expecting to witness a magic performance while going about their daily routines, and this element of surprise amplifies the astonishment and makes the experience all the more magical.

When you set out to film street magic, it is important to brace yourself for rejection. People lead busy lives and they also don’t know the stranger approaching, asking to show them a trick. It is so important not to take it personally and try and move on as quickly as you can so that you don’t dwell. As cliche as it sounds, perseverance pays off!

Are street magic and close-up magic the same thing?

In a nutshell, yes. Both forms of entertainment involve a high level of audience interaction. Furthermore, both rely heavily on the performers’ charisma, showmanship, and ability to connect with spectators on a personal level. Finally, both types of magic use everyday items that you might expect to find in your house.

I guess the main difference is if you hire a close-up magician, they will be dressed to suit the event, whereas a street magician is dressed to suit their surroundings.

Is street magic hard?

Street magic is as hard as it gets. In my career, I am paid to attend events as a working magician. Either attendees are aware that I’m there, or they assume I’m meant to be. This is probably the primary differentiator with street magic. Asides from the skill, practice, and precision to execute tricks, street magic relies on “coming in cold” and developing a unique mastery of crowd control to deliver a memorable experience.

Who gets paid for Street Magic?

There are many different events I’ve worked on, along with TV appearances, in which I’ve emulated a “street style” performance. However, as previously discussed, in its purest form, performing as a street magician is free.

There is a performance space in Covent Garden called “Magic Corner”. Here you will find some phenomenal street magicians who make their living in front of unsuspecting audiences. If you stop to watch and find yourself enjoying what you see it is customary to contribute a small fee. It does not have to by much – whatever you think is appropriate!

Can I book a street magician?

Yes absolutely – I regularly get booked as a street magician! Hopefully, by now, you have a good understanding of what a street magician is. Check out my showreel to see exactly what it is! Alternatively, feel free to reach out today and I’ll happily walk you through exactly what you can expect!

Overall, street magic is an enchanting form of entertainment that brings the wonder of magic to unexpected places. It bridges the gap between the magician and the audience in a personal and captivating way that is truly unforgettable. It’s an art form that continues to delight and amaze people worldwide, proving that magic can be found anywhere if you know where to look.

I look forward to you seeing my new showreel and I really hope you enjoy it!

Don’t take our word for it…

Fergus is not only a hugely talented magician – one of the finest close up magicians in the country – but also the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. He’s one of very few I’d recommend: you and your guests will absolutely adore him

We had Fergus perform two shows in the lead up to Christmas and they were an absolute hit with everyone! The show is super engaging, polished and absolutely mind-blowing. Working with Fergus before and after the shows was also a pleasure. He’s very professional, thoughtful and kind. An all round great experience!

Fergus performed to a packed room of 350+ M&A professionals ranging from aged 19 to 50+ and had the entire room absolutely gripped! The feedback was tremendous and he will go down as one of our all time best 'guest speakers'! Thank you and we look forward to having you back.

It is hard to put into words how grateful we are to Fergus for performing at our wedding. It is probably the 5th time we have seen him perform at either a private or corporate event. Each time his act varies and it’s like we see him for the first time again. He is a truly wonderful person and an absolutely incredible performer. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

Fergus was our No 1 choice for our corporate global annual get together for 2020 via Zoom. When you come across a talent like this, he sets a benchmark that's grossly unattainable by others. Humble, astonishingly natural…A guy with a heart the size of the entire Magic Circle, he has EQ that's off the chart and a way about him that genuinely leaves you in awe.
